Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Infectious Disease Control: Cleaning, Disinfection & Sterilization is a free veterinary CE offering made possible through the generous educational support of Virox® and NAVTA

Environmental and equipment cleaning, disinfection, and, in some settings, sterilization are critical to preventing workplace-associated infections. Effective infection control protocols require identifying the steps and correct procedures needed for success. This course reviews the components of an effective protocol along with common disinfection pitfalls and their solutions. Lastly, the course outlines how to adjust the workplace cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization protocols to better protect the health of both animals and people.

After completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • outline the role of environmental and equipment cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization in preventing workplace-associated infections in both animals and people
  • identify steps and protocols for effective cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization
  • discuss how to choose a disinfectant that is best aligned with the needs and concerns of the facility, considering the targeted pathogens, spectrum of activity, contact time, activity in the presence of organic matter, human/animal safety, and cost
  • discuss best practices for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of specific types of equipment
  • outline common cleaning and disinfection pitfalls and their solutions
  • recommend adjustments to workplace cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization protocols
  • explain the need for infection prevention checklists and standard operating procedures
