Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Feline Anesthesia: Renal Disease is a self-study course.

Cats needing anesthesia often present with pre-existing disease. In the case of chronic renal disease, it is important to understand the basic pathophysiology and interplay with the effects of anesthesia and anesthesia drugs. Properly applied, this knowledge helps to avoid worsening of already compromised renal function and maximizes positive outcome. This course will discuss the basic approach to take when dealing with the patient with chronic renal disease in need of general anesthesia.

At the end of the presentation attendees should be able to:

  • outline IRIS staging guidelines and discuss their use in anesthesia planning
  • explain the clinical impact of chronic renal disease and its interplay with the effects of general anesthesia and medications
  • explain how to optimize fluid therapy and cardiovascular homeostasis to minimize the impact of general anesthesia on cats with renal disease
  • develop a recovery plan that considers the post anesthesia impact and care of the cat with chronic renal disease
