Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Keep the Beat - Anesthetic Considerations for Patients with Cardiac Disease utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Fluid administration in human and veterinary patients warrants constant re-evaluation. Fluid therapy is not benign. Determining the right amount and type are key to successful patient outcomes. We’ve been told to hold back on fluid rates and total doses administered perioperatively in the past 10 or so years. However, the pendulum may have swung a bit too much in the other direction. Fluid therapy must always be based on patient exam and evaluation. Ways to treat hypotension need to be discussed preoperatively to help avoid fluid overload.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • explain how different types of cardiac diseases affect patients’ blood flow and perfusion
  • outline basic pathophysiology of common cardiac diseases seen in veterinary patients
  • discuss how anesthesia can affect patients with cardiac disease
  • outline how to prevent, manage, or treat anesthetic complications in patients with cardiac disease
