Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Analgesia - Opioids and their Alternatives utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

This course provides an overview of current systemic pain management drugs, including opioids and a selection of non-opioid analgesics.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • discuss indications and contraindications for the use of opioids in small animal patients
  • outline non-opioid medications for given patient populations as well as contraindicated drugs
  • compare and contrast a selection of complimentary and alternative analgesia techniques
  • outline cannabinoids and the potential use for them in veterinary medicine

Participant Feedback

When asked what aspects of the course liked best some responses were:

...Very good review/overview of different drugs used for anesthetic/analgesic purposes.

...I liked the discussion of cannabinoids, as I graduated vet school long before they were in everyday medical consideration

...This was a truly well taught course. The presenter was so knowledgeable about the subject and I learned a lot. It can be very confusing to understand the action of so many different pain medications and their potential side effects but the slides and drawings helped with comprehension.

...Gave better understanding of different modalities of analgesiaGood review of opioids and cannabinoid usage in veterinary medicine.

...I learned lots of new details about the drugs we use every day in the ER
