Course Focus and Learning Objectives

Implementing Kitten and Puppy Socialization Programs is a self-study course.

Appropriate puppy and kitten socialization at the correct age will decrease the number of pets relinquished to shelters by helping to reduce the behaviors that are often the cause. Socialization will also help puppies and kittens become less stressed during visits to the practice. This course is designed to aid in the development of socialization classes within the practice environment.

Participants will be introduced to the stages of development of both puppies and kittens including when the socialization period for each species occurs as well as basics of training. Logistics of a class, identifying client needs, and exceeding client expectations are covered at length. The goals of a socialization class are highlighted with examples and resources provided to help practice teams succeed, starting with their first class.

At the end of the presentation attendees should be able to:

  • recognize and describe milestones in puppy and kitten development
  • describe and discuss how early socialization impacts puppy and kitten development
  • define the goals and benefits of socialization
  • explain the benefits of socialization classes to clients and team members
  • outline how to implement surveys to identify client needs
  • define client expectations that need to be met when hosting a class
  • discuss the process of designing and implementing successful puppy and kitten class curriculum
  • outline skills and topics to be covered in each socialization session
  • discuss how to select reinforcers for individual animals
  • explain how to use positive reinforcement to teach behaviors
  • give examples of the logistics of structuring socialization classes
  • discuss how to evaluate and choose materials for use in class
  • identify different client related challenges that can arise and discuss how to manage these challenges
