Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Canine Influenza from Emergence to Outbreaks - Protecting our Patients and Clinics utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

In 2015 a novel flu virus was identified in dogs in the US. This canine influenza virus (CIV) quickly spread between dogs and continues to cause outbreaks with considerable dog illness and even death. This course provides the tools needed to tackle CIV. It outlines practical steps to assist in identifying these patients before they come in the door and infect other dogs, making the diagnosis to best inform treatment, developing a dog/owner specific prevention plan, and steps every facility should take to protect themselves from dog respiratory infections and outbreaks.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • explain the impact of canine influenza virus (CIV) on their veterinary practice
  • recognize aspects of CIV infection and transmission
  • evaluate diagnostics for CIV
  • discuss the role of infection control practices in limiting the impact of CIV on patients and veterinary clinics
