Course Focus and Learning Objectives

VetCE on Demand: Hypersomatotropism - A Common Cause of Diabetes Mellitus in Cats utilizes the archive of a live presentation under the same name.

Are you treating cats with diabetes mellitus (DM)? At least 1 in 4 of those cats have concurrent hypersomatotropism (DM-HS). The treatment, prognosis, progression, and monitoring of cats with DM and HS-DM can be vastly different. Therefore, differentiating between DM and HS-DM is critical. If you are waiting for classic acromegalic phenotype or excessive insulin requirements before diagnosing, you are missing many of these cats. Diagnosis, management, treatment goals, and monitoring of cats with HS-DM are discussed.

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • recognize and diagnose HS in cats with DM
  • list the pros and cons of different treatment modalities for HS-DM to pet owners.
  • explain the progression of HS-DM to educate pet owners about expectations and prognosis.
